Decision Tools:
- Values – have them listed and readily visible before you begin using the framework.
- Decision tracker – if you’re not practiced at tuning into your internal world, you should start by completing the decision tracker for a few weeks before using this framework. Filling out the tracker will make the DECISION section easier. Or go ahead and use the framework and if you’re struggling to get connected to your internal world, use the tracker for a few weeks or a month and then come back to the framework.

Do your decision options align with your values?
Reference your values when thinking through this. Often we aren’t aware that we are not in alignment with our values and when we are, decisions and life are smoother.

Does this decision involve change?
Change requires extra effort for your brain, your brain will resist change, so it’s important to call this out so that you’re not at the mercy of your brain’s preference for the status quo.

Examine your internal compass
Internally DECIDE:

Energy: What are your energy levels towards this decision?

Commitments: What commitments affect this decision?

Focus on external influences
External influences of decision-making:
Interact with trusted advisors and do some focused research
1. Pick one or two people whom you can go to for their perspective. Keep in mind their expertise, their lens, and who they are. Be extremely selective and don’t consult with anyone who can’t provide a perspective that you are lacking, or if they aren’t an expert they know you well and can be objective (i.e. your parents often aren’t able to be completely objective in their perspective because their worries may cloud their judgment).
2. Consult with knowledgeable individuals for guidance.
3. Do any research needed to gather data to support your decision-making efforts
What additional thoughts, ideas, or suggestions did your trusted advisors and research add to the decision-making process?
Navigate options and outcomes
Create a worst-case scenario. Is this worst-case scenario something you can live with?
Congrats!
Review your answers and your final decision
